Differentiation Factor:
Extending Learning With Real-Time Projects

Real-Time Projects provide additional opportunities to differentiate instruction.
Available on the READ 180 Community, Real-Time Projects allow students to connect each rBook Workshop to current events and issues. Real-Time Projects guide students to engage with multimedia through assignments such as commenting on online news articles, writing a blog entry, and composing an email.

The projects include one page of step-by-step instructions and one page to complete the project. Because each project takes 20 minutes to complete, they can fit in almost anywhere in the Instructional Model.

Downloading Real-Time Projects

Follow these steps to locate Real-Time Projects:
  • Go to www.read180.com/community and log in.
  • Click the RESOURCE LIBRARY tab.
  • Click Search Resources.
  • Enter "real time" in the keyword box.
  • Click Search near the bottom of the page.

Differentiating With Real-Time Projects

Real-Time Projects offer many opportunities to differentiate instruction. Students can complete them individually, in pairs, or in groups. Projects take about 20 minutes to complete, and can be used during Whole- or Small-Group Instruction.

When to Use How to Use
Reading or Vocabulary/Word Study CheckPoint Day
  • Review students’ mastery of skills.
  • If some students need reteaching, group them and reteach the material to their small groups. Students who have mastered the material can complete the Real-Time Project during their small group.
  • If all students need reteaching, group them according to their needs and target those skills during Small-Group Instruction. Complete the Real-Time Project during Whole-Group Instruction.
End-of-Workshop CheckPoint Day
  • Run the rSkills Tests Summary Skills Report. Review the Score Range and Average Score columns to identify any skills students have not yet mastered.
  • If the score range reveals that most students need additional review for a skill, reteach it during Whole-Group Instruction. During Small-Group Instruction, have students complete a Real-Time project or reteach a second skill as needed.
  • If students struggle with different skills, group them accordingly and target those skills during Small-Group Instruction. Complete the Real-Time Project during Whole-Group Instruction.
Homework or Independent Practice
  • If you assign homework, consider having students complete Real-Time Projects independently.
  • Use Real-Time Projects for students who need additional writing practice.
