My high school's special education program is interested in Expert 21 as a language arts program for 11th and 12th grade resource center students.  I know Scholastic identifies the program as one for 6-9th grade students, but from my research, the skills it teaches are exactly what our special education students need to learn before embarking on the rest of their life outside of high school, be it the World of Work, or a community college.  Any thoughts from Expert 21 teachers?  Are you using the program with regular ed students or special ed students?  What grade level?  Do you see any limitations or problems with the program, or in using it with SPED Juniors and Seniors?  Thanks for your input!  Debbie

  • Expert 21 for Special Education Students

    Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your question.  While Expert 21 is designed for students in grades 6-9, ultimately, it will be your students’ reading comprehension level that will determine the appropriateness of Expert 21. As you indicated, Expert 21 is a comprehensive language arts program that combines inquiry-based learning, explicit instruction and scaffolds for comprehension and literacy skills with the application of real world, 21st Century skills and strategies that all students will need for their future. The content is contemporary and relevant, and integrates English language arts and interdisciplinary content area literacy throughout the program.

Although the program does include a number of scaffolds to build students’ understanding, critical thinking, and independent inquiry, please keep in mind that Expert 21 is not an intervention program.  If you are looking for an intervention program then READ 180 may be a more viable option, however if you are looking for a 21st century program that includes engaging, appropriate and applicable content then Expert 21 may be a great solution for you and your students.

We are actually looking at using Expert 21 as part of a Reading and Writing Strategies class for sophomore and junior level students who need additional reading and writing support and have already been in Read 180 as freshmen. We looked at the materials and they seem like the topics would still work with HS level students.

I'm putting this in all the Expert 21 srands so that those of you who are going to NSI realize that there is a workshop called Moving From READ 180 to Expert 21!  I saw it on Monday.  It may be another day, and I have missed it.
